This study is a correlation study. The idea of doing this research is because there is a common believe that if parents are from low educational background, their children will also have low educational background. Parents’ educational background also influence to their children motivation in learning. It is different with what happens in SMPN 1 Long Ikis. SMPN 1 Long Ikis is one of school in Paser Regency which has a lot of students. Mostly of parents are from low education level. But, according to the teachers, students’ interest in learning English is high. It can be proven with there are so many students join the English course.
Problem of the study is what the correlation between parents’ educational background and students’ motivation in learning English at second year students of SMPN 1 Long Ikis in the 2009/2010 academic year is.
The purpose of this study is to describe the correlation between parents’ educational background and students’ motivation in learning English at second year students of SMPN 1 Long Ikis in the 2009/2010 academic year.
Because of this study has an aim to describe the correlation between two variables, this study is qualitative and uses correlation as the research design. This study will examine the correlation between two set of data, they are parents’ educational background and students’ motivation in learning English. The questionnaire is used to get the data for this study.
This study revealed the following findings: (1) it is found that there are still some uneducated parents of students at SMPN 1 Long Ikis, those are 14 people, (2) the highest number of parents’ educational background is elementary high school and the smallest number of parents’ educational background is master degree, and (3) it can be said that parents’ educational background did not quite influence the students’ motivation in learning English.
This study recommends the parents to give motivation and encouragement to their children in learning English. It is also suggested that the English teacher to give attention to the students in form of positive reinforcement, to apply the appropriate teaching method, and to build comfortable atmosphere in the classroom during the teaching and learning process.
